COVER STORY

THE ALLIES WON PRETTY MUCH BECAUSE OF AMERICA'S ENTRY INTO THE WAR. BY 1918 ENGLAND, FRANCE, AND GERMANY HAD PRETTY MUCH WORN THEMSELVES OUT IN FIGHTING. RUSSIA HAD BEEN KNOCKED OUT OF THE WAR, AND THIS GAVE GERMANY ONE LAST CHANCE TO GET VICTORY IN THE WEST. HOWEVER, THEIR LAST OFFENSIVE STARTED JUST AS THE US BEGAN SENDING MUNITIONS, SUPPLIES, AND MOST CRITICALLY MANPOWER TO STIFFEN ALLIED RESISTANCE. THIS ISN'T TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE ALLIED EFFORTS BEFORE THE ARRIVAL OF THE AMERICANS. BUT THE US SHIFTED THE BALANCE OF POWER ENOUGH FOR THE ALLIES TO WIN A DECISIVE VICTORY.

ONE HAS TO WONDER WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF THE US HAD NOT INTERVENED. WITHOUT THE US INVOLVED, BOTH SIDES MIGHT HAVE FINALLY GOTTEN AROUND TO COMING UP WITH AN ARMISTICE THAT WOULD HAVE PREVENTED THE CONDITIONS THAT LET HITLER COME TO POWER.

THE NEW WEAPONS OF WW1: HOW DID THE NEW WEAPONS OF WW1 AFFECT THE WAR? WHAT WAS THE BEST WEAPON OF CHOICE? WERE THESE WEAPONS EFFECTIVE?
The effects of new weapons in world war I is that opposing sides had the abbility to take down their enemies from far distances faster. The machine gun was the cause for entrenchment. The Machine gun forced them to dig, the artillery kept them there. Armies could no longer win wars by mass numbers alone.
Machine guns were first used during the American Civil War to devastating effect, but advances in technology made the machine guns even more effective during World War 1.They could fire over 600 bullets in one minute and they were so effective that they were considered as "Weapons of mass Destruction. The German Maxim machine gun was fed by a fabric or metal belt, making it a very effective automatic weapon, its relatively small size also made it difficult for the enemy to destroy.

WESTERN VS EASTER FRONTS: EXPLAIN THE SCHLIEFFEN PLAN. HOW WAS THE WAR ON THE WESTERN AND EASTERN FRONT DIFFERENT? HOW WAS IT THE SAME?
The Schlieffen Plan was Germany's key war plan for invading France at the start of World War 1. It involved marching through Belgium in order to knock France out of the war quickly.
War on the Eastern front against Russia was marked by atrocities by both the "Vons" (Germans) and the "Ivans" ( Russians). Being captured meant you would probably be tortured to death and so this fact led to the utmost brutality . The Germans viewed the Russian as "Untermensch" (Less than [sub]human) so it made it easier to kill without mercy . The Russians , understandably , felt the need to reciprocate in kind .
